Top Tips for Traveling the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway

Don't go down the AICW without having the following:

Aqual Map app for your Android or iOS phone or other device.   This app has very accurate chart data, and it is very responsive.   When you zoom in at a critical moment, it zooms in instantly, no waiting for a refresh or download.   Get this fantastic app by first purchasing the chart catalog product 'USA & Canada' for $15/yr and then download the charts along the AICW.   Then under Aqua Map settings, navigate to 'Aqua Map Master' and purchase it for $15/yr.   Aqua Map Master will give you the USACE survey data that overlays on the channel, showing you the shoaling that exists at nearly every inlet, and other critical areas.   Aqua Map Master will also allow you to optionally enable and see Waterway Guide data (waypoints).   This is the data that Bob423 contributes to the Waterway Guide for many of the AICW hazards and is the screen shots frequently posted.   You now have a fantastic set of tools, but to make it even easier, add the Bob 423 Tracks (next step).

Bob 423 Tracks   After acquiring Aqua Map and installing the USACE survey chart overlays via the 'Aqua Map Master', you are pretty well set.   But you can take one more giant leap forward in terms of safety and confidence by adding the display of Bob423 tracks to Aqua Map.   Aqua Map has a feature under 'Settings' -> 'Live Sharing' where you can have Bob423 tracks overlaid on your charts and they will be updated automatically.   To do this, follow Bob423's instructions on his website 'How to Sync B423 Tracks'.   Note that in those instructions, searching for 'Bob423' won't show the Bob423 tracks, but if you search for 'Fleetwing - Bob423' you will find him / them.

Waterway Guide   The Waterway Guide online (NOT the app as of September 2021) allows you to interactively browse the AICW via a map (Aqua Map) and review 'Navigation Alerts'.   The prior two steps will give you assistance with dealing with shoaling, but it won't tell you about bridge closures and other incidents that could delay your travel for days.   It is a MUST USE tool, and it is free.

Florida Anchoring Restrictions

As of 2017, you may not anchor or moor within 150 feet of any marina, boat ramp, boatyard, or another vessel launching or unloading facility.   You may not anchor within 300 ft of a facility that services or repairs a yacht with a waterline length of 120 feet or greater.   You may not anchor within 100 ft of a marked public mooring field boundary.

The following five public mooring fields have enacted a local anchoring ordinance: City of St. Augustine, Monroe County (Florida Keys), City of Sarasota, City of St. Petersburg, Martin County, City of Stuart.

June 20201 FL S.B. 1946 signed by Gov. DeSantis effectively allows responsible active cruisers traveling Florida's water the ability to stay in an ancharage limitation area for 45 days.

Effective July 2016, overnight anchoring is restricted in the densely populated urban areas of Miami-Date and Broward counties.   Specifically, in Middle River between Northeast 21st Court and the ICW, Sunset Lake, and the section of Biscayne Bay between Rivo Alto Island and Di Lido Island; San Marino Island and San Marco Island; and San Marco Island and Biscayne Island.   2017 Forida State Statute Chapter 327.

First violation $50, 2nd $100, third $250.   If a registration is more than 6 months expired, $50 for first offense, $250 for the second, $500 for the third, and you must appear in court.

Live-aboards are considered active cruisers who sleep on their boats and have no permanant residence on land

Bob423 provides the best information for transiting the Atlantic ICW.   Much of his information is shared with the Waterway Guide, but he also posts GPS tracks on his website.

For Garmin Homeport users, download the B423 long tracks (.gpx file).   Visit GPS Visualizer and 'Upload a GPS file'.   Change the output format to 'GPX file', and then click the 'Convert it' button.   After the conversion, download the GPX file and then import it with Garmin Homeport app.   GPS Visualizer fixes something in the GPX file that Garmin Homeport doesn't like.
