The Great Loop

Requirements: Less than 5 ft draft. Max height 19 ft. Fuel range 250 mi. Six to nine months of time. More than 5600 miles across 22 states.
  1. Up the Atlantic ICW in the spring. Buffalo and Chicago in the summer. Down the inland rivers in the fall. Across the Gulf in the winter.
  2. Atlantic ICW. From Norfolk VA it is 279 miles to the Hudson River. Plan the voyage so that you are at the entrance of the Erie Canal around mid-May.
  3. The Hudson River is 134 beautiful miles
  4. The Great Loop distance on the Erie Canal is 338 miles. It stretches from Waterford, NY to the Upper Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
  5. The distance across the Great Lakes from Buffalo, NY to Chicago is 892 statute miles (15 to 20 days). Plan to to reach Chicago and be off the Great Lakes until mid-September.
  6. Illinois River trip is 334 miles. It is the connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.
  7. The Upper Mississippi River is only 219 miles to Cairo at the junction of the Ohio River and the Lower Mississippi.
  8. The Lower Mississippi River: The Mississippi River is among the TOP TEN river cruises in the world. However, it is 871 miles from Cairo to the Harvey Lock and Gulf ICW which is just south of New Orleans, and only two safe, convenient, stops for fuel and provisions exist.
  9. Ohio River is only 46 miles.
  10. Cumberland River & Lake Barkley to the Tennessee River is an optional 33 miles to get to Nashville.
  11. Tennessee River. It is 207 miles from the Ohio River to Pickwick Landing Lock and Dam - 8 miles further is the entrance of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
  12. Tennessee-Tombigbee to Mobile Bay 234 miles.
  13. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway is 218 miles from Mobile, AL to Carrabelle, FL.
  14. Across the Gulf of Mexico
  15. Lake Okeechobee Waterway is 154 miles through 5 locks.
